From the ports of loading, all goods to Ghana, including those that are in transit, must get the necessary Electronic Cargo Tracking Number/Smart port Note (ECTN/SPN) as of November 1st, 2023. Significant fines could be imposed on any goods lacking a valid ECTN.

Disclaimer:

It is important to check with your importer or customs agent in Ghana if this certificate is necessary for your consignment, as there have been contradictory reports recently about the Ghana ECTN/SPN certificate. Please note that once the ECTN certificate procedure has started, fees are not refundable. Any problems that occur after the certificate’s pre-validation phase are not our responsibility.

Official Notice From The Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MOFEP):

What is the CTN (Cargo Tracking Note) Certificate?

CTN is a digital certificate issued per Bill of Lading or Airwaybill indicating the kind and quantity of cargo, shipper & consignee details, and shipment details such as loading and discharge ports and dates, container details, etc.

Why is CTN / Cargo Tracking Note Necessary for Ghana?

All information & transporting documents are submitted online before the loading; therefore, CTN informs port authorities regarding the cargo before the vessel arrives at the port and allows authorities to manage port traffic.

Why must you obtain a Chana CTN Certificate for your Shipments?

Without a CTN, cargo can not be cleared from customs, and a demurrage fee will occur until a valid CTN certificate/number is presented.

Which Documents are Necessary for Ghana CTN?

Commercial invoice, packing list, and an export customs declaration are needed for pre-validation of the CTN. In addition, an original Bill of Lading must be submitted for validation.

Notice: You may cancel the process anytime during the CTN Application.

Commonly mistakes for Ghana Shipments.

Pre-validated certificates must be validated within 7 days, or the application will be deleted, and all the submitted date will be lost.

Applying for CTN is the shipper’s or exporter’s responsibility, and importers can not apply for CTN. The shipper/exporter must apply for CTN at the port of origin.

The consignee must present any amendment request on a validated CTN at the destination port since validated CTNs can not be amended.
